One Shirt, Two Ways: Turn Off the Shoulder Into One Shoulder

by Laura Perkins

Who doesn't love being able to take one outfit and wear it two different ways?! More bang for your buck, right? Well I was excited when I realized I could take this basic, white off the shoulder shirt (which is so cute by the way and perfect to pair with just about anything) and easily turn it into a one shoulder blouse (the latest craze). Trust me - no one would ever know it wasn't originally intended to be that way (you can't see the arm hole). And you can do it with most off the shoulder shirts. The key is the style needs to be flowy/ruffley. If it's a fitted top it wouldn't work. And unfortunately you can't do it the other way around (ie you can't take a one shoulder shirt and turn it into an off the shoulder look). But you'd be surprised how many off the shoulder shirts and dresses you have in your closet that you can turn into one shoulder. Try it out! Some people say one shoulder is the new off the shoulder (if only I would have kept so many of my one shoulder tops circa 2000 - 2002) but you know what - I'm still a pretty big fan of off the shoulder so it's not going anywhere in my book. :)

Styling tip: This shirt is a little long so I like to do the front tuck. It shows off your waist to make it extra flattering and very chic. I'm also wearing high waisted jeans so a front tuck allows you to see the hi rise style. Finish the look with a great pair of low block heels (you guys know I'm obsessed).

Okay, if you girls don't own an off-the-shoulder top or dress, you seriously need one! They have been a summer essential for me and are just so flattering. I'm excited to tell you that this blouse is actually a non-maternity DRESS from Zara that I bought to wear as a top! Haha! Back in the spring, I had been on the hunt for an off-the-shoulder top with oversized ruffles (which was hard to find that would fit this bump) but when I saw this one, I fell in love. The dress looked pretty short so I knew I could make it work as a tunic. The little light blue and white pinstripes are so cute. And the ruffles just make it really fun and flirty. I'll definitely be wearing this after the baby is born! With my red lipstick and basket clutch, some girl told me I looked like a modern day Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz! Hah! I'll take it! :)

I can’t get enough of the off-the-shoulder trend this season! It's so cute! This ASOS cotton dress was such a steal - only $25!! (I know! I almost wanted to buy one in every color!) It's also available in non-maternity (although I'm not sure there's much of a difference between maternity and non-maternity for this style - which is great because I can definitely wear it after the baby is born!) You can throw it on as a beach cover up, lounge around the house in it, or add some statement jewelry for a dressier daytime look. It kind of reminds me of an off-the-shoulder moo moo which is probably why I love it. Hah! It’s super comfy and perfect for a little weekend getaway! Complete the look with some gladiator or lace-up sandals. Since the dress is simple, you can have fun with shoes that have a little more interesting detail. I think I’m going to be living in this piece all summer long!
